BTRC summons Facebook, TikTok representatives
The Bangladesh Telecommunication Regulatory Commission (BTRC) has summoned representatives from various social media platforms, including Facebook and TikTok, to appear in person at the BTRC building in Agargaon, Dhaka, by Wednesday (July 31).
State Minister for Posts, Telecommunications, and Information Technology Zunaid Ahmed Palak announced this during a briefing at the BTRC on Sunday (July 28) around 11:00 AM.
Palak stated that Facebook is allowing content to be promoted that should be automatically blocked according to their policy. "No action was taken against those contents. It has been asked why they did not take action. Their representatives have been summoned to BTRC by July 31. They have to come in person and explain," he said.
The state minister added that Facebook, Instagram, and TikTok are currently closed in Bangladesh and will remain so until the platforms provide satisfactory explanations to the BTRC. The government will remain steadfast in its decision.
Earlier, from 9:00am to 11:00am, Palak held a meeting with officials from the country's four mobile operator companies, four mobile financial services (MFS), and the Association of Mobile Telephone Operators of Bangladesh (AMTOB).
