Man claims iPhone 7 burst into flames in his car

Seems like Samsung is not the only one facing allegations of ‘exploding’ phones.

Apple on Friday confirmed it is investigating reports after an Australian man claimed his new iPhone 7 caught fire and destroyed his car.

Speaking to Channel 7, Australian surfer Mat Jones said he left his iPhone wrapped in a pair of trousers in his car while he had gone into the water and came back to find his car filled with black smoke. ‘As I looked into my car you could not see inside the car, like all the windows were just black,’ he said.

Footage taken from another phone shows the car burnt from the inside with the seats and dashboard melted by the fire, The Express Tribune reported.

Jones eventually removed his clothes from the car only to find his iPhone melting inside them. ‘Ash was just coming from inside the pants, which then, once you wrapped open the pants the phone was just melting inside of it.’

The surfer says that he has never used a third party charger nor has dropped the phone which he bought an only a week ago.

A spokeswoman for Apple said the company was investigating the complaint. ‘We’re in touch with the customer and we’re looking into it,’ she said.

The news comes after Samsung issued a global recall and suspended production of its flagship Note 7 which suffered from faulty batteries causing the phone to explode or catch fire.

The ill-fated smartphone is now banned from air travel with airlines carrying containment bags on planes as precautions.
