Crowds cheer SAFF-winners on open-top bus

The Bangladesh women’s football team was welcomed back home with a grand reception after securing their second consecutive SAFF Women’s Championship title, defeating Nepal 2-1 in the final held in Kathmandu on Wednesday.

Following last year’s victory, the team was once again honored with a celebratory ride in an open-top bus as they journeyed from Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport to the Bangladesh Football Federation (BFF).

The champions touched down in Dhaka at 2:15 pm on Thursday, where they were greeted by an enthusiastic crowd and BFF officials.

Captain Sabina Khatun, draped in the Bangladeshi flag, led the team from the front of the bus, while outgoing coach Peter Butler followed closely behind.

Rupna Chakma, Rituparna, and Sanjida joined their captain in waving to fans lining the streets, who cheered in celebration of the team’s historic achievement.

In an emotional speech at the airport, Coach Butler expressed his pride in the team, stating, “I am extremely pleased with the girls’ performance. This second consecutive title has brought joy to our nation.”

Captain Sabina Khatun also spoke, thanking both past and present BFF committees for their support, crediting everyone involved for the team’s ongoing success.

“This victory feels as special as the first. The crowd’s love for football is undeniable, and this support means so much to us,” she shared.

Later on the day, Youth and Sports Adviser Asif Mahmud Sajeeb Bhuiyan will officially welcome the team at the BFF headquarters at 5:00 pm. The open-top bus celebration marks yet another historic chapter for Bangladesh’s women’s football, reflecting the nation’s growing passion and support for the sport.
