Shakib should clarify his political stance: Sports adviser

Asif Mahmud Sajib Bhuiyan, Adviser to the Ministry of Youth and Sports, suggested that cricketer Shakib Al Hasan should clarify his political stance.

He made this comment during a courtesy meeting and check-taking ceremony with Grameenphone officials at the Ministry of Labour on Sunday (September 29).

The adviser also assured that Shakib Al Hasan would receive all necessary security as a player, responding to discussions around Shakib's request for security from the Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB). “BCB has issued a statement on this matter, and as a state, we are obligated to provide security to every citizen, including Shakib,” he said.

Asif Mahmud pointed out that Shakib has two distinct identities—one as a player and another as a political figure, having contested an MP election under the Awami League banner. "People have mixed reactions to both identities," he said.

He emphasised the importance of providing adequate security to Shakib in his capacity as a cricketer. Regarding legal matters, the adviser mentioned, “The Ministry of Law has stated that if Shakib has no involvement in the murder case bearing his name, it could be dismissed.”

However, Asif Mahmud addressed the potential public resentment stemming from Shakib's political involvement, stating, "Even if I have five police constables and a gunman, if I face anger from 10 crore people, what protection can they provide?"

He added that public sentiment needs to be addressed through communication.

The adviser further emphasised the need for Shakib to clarify his political position, saying, “Mashrafe bin Mortuza has already spoken about his political identity, and I believe Shakib needs to do the same."

He concluded by noting that if there is any security threat due to public anger, it is difficult for anyone to ensure complete protection.

"Even Sheikh Hasina couldn’t be fully protected—she had to flee the country once. Shakib must clarify his political stance, but it is our responsibility to ensure the safety of every player, and we are committed to fulfilling that duty.”
