Namibia beat Sri Lanka in opening match of T20 WC 2022

Namibia beat Sri Lanka by 55 runs in the opening game in 2022 Men's T20 World Cup in Australia on Sunday. Sri Lanka was bowled out for just 108 in 19 overs.

Sri Lanka's chase of 164 never took off as Namibia kept chipping away at their lineup. Ben Shikongo rattled the Sri Lankan top order when he took two wickets in the space of six balls to remove Danushka Gunathilaka and Pathum Nissanka in the fourth over. It was a double-wicket maiden. Bernard Scholtz, David Wiese and Frylinck also picked two wickets each, reports Sportstar.

Earlier, Namibia recovered from 93-6 to add 70 from last 37 balls. Jan Frylinck scored 44 (28) and Smit smacked 31 off just 16 balls to help the side recover. Pramod Madushan took 2 for 37.

Two sides from each group qualify for Super 12s, which begin on 22 October. Sri Lanka and Namibia join Netherlands and United Arab Emirates in Group A in first round. West Indies, Scotland, Zimbabwe and Ireland make up Group B.

Namibia qualified from the first round at the last T20 World Cup in United Arab Emirates in 2021, finishing second behind Sri Lanka in a group that included Ireland and the Netherlands.
