Messi enjoys family holiday in Ibiza
Lionel Messi has taken some time out to enjoy a holiday in Ibiza following missing out on the Copa America title with Argentina.
The 29-year-old looked relaxed as he took a sip of a drink on a yacht in Formentara where he is taking a break with wife Antonella Roccuzzo and his family.
He was all smiles has he took a dip in the sea ahead of returning to Barcelona following yet more international final heartbreak over the summer.
Messi missed a penalty in the shootout against Chile in New Jersey following a 0-0 draw after extra time, as Alexis Sanchez and co took the title.
It was his third consecutive final defeat and fourth in all with Argentina, and he announced his international retirement following the match.
‘That is it. I fought hard,’ he said. ‘This is the fourth final I couldn’t win. I would like to win for the national team more than anybody, but I think it’s not for me.
‘This is it. This is my decision. I fought hard. I did everything I could to win. But the truth is this is it. It’s already been four finals. I was already thinking about it. I did everything I could. It was not possible to win.’
Despite his decision, Barca teammate Luis Suarez has tipped Messi to make a U-Turn and represent Argentina again.
‘I’m sure that he will change his mind, but whatever he decides he will still be the best ever,’ the Barca striker told Radio Tenfield. ‘Knowing Leo, I’m sure it was said in a moment of sadness and helplessness.
‘It would be a shame for football if he took this decision, but I’m sure he will reconsider and change his mind.
‘It’s a difficult time. Everyone has the right to make decisions and they should be respected.’
