Messi misses penalty as Argentina held by Iceland

Lionel Messi’s missed penalty proved crucial as Argentina were held to a 1-1 draw with Iceland in their World Cup Group D opening game in Moscow.

Argentina looked to be in cruise control early in the game and were rewarded in the 19th minute as Sergio Aguero smashed home a fine left-footed effort from eight yards out.

But Iceland kicked into the form that saw them reach the last eight of Euro 2016 and capitalised on some poor Argentinian defending to grab an equaliser four minutes later.

Alfred Finnbogason made a nuisance of himself in the Argentina box and was then on hand to guide the ball home from just outside the six-yard box.

Messi had a chance from the spot to give his side maximum points to begin their World Cup campaign, however, Hannes  Halldorsson read his intentions and made a great save to his right to prevent the Barcelona superstar.

Argentina pushed for a winner but Iceland's stubborn defence held firm to ensure that they began their first ever World Cup with a well-deserved point.
