ICC Champions Trophy: India miss deadline to name squad
India failed to submit their squad for the upcoming Champions Trophy by Tuesday`s midnight deadline, with their cricket board refusing to rule out boycotting the tournament altogether.
The Indian board (BCCI) is trying to negotiate a better revenue deal with the International Cricket Council (ICC) after a meeting in February where the ICC agreed "in principle" to a new proposed governance structure and revenue distribution model in the game.
ICC chairman Shashank Manohar has long been critical of the current `Big Three` model introduced 2014, which effectively put India, England and Australia in control of the game`s finances and administration.
The new proposals seek to address the current imbalance but the BCCI opposes the move, which would see its revenue share decreased.
India`s huge market is a major draw for sponsors, and the BCCI`s move in delaying the naming of its Champions Trophy squad beyond the Tuesday deadline is seen in some quarters as a pressure tactic aimed at getting the best possible deal from the ICC.
India, who won the last edition in 2013, are the only team not to name a 15-man squad for tournament which runs from June 1.
The ICC, however, is understood to be relaxed about the situation, with Tuesday`s initial deadline focused chiefly around promotional purposes, and India are not expected to face any penalty for their delay, provided they move forward and submit their squad as anticipated.
The ICC`s meetings held this week in Dubai on the future of Test cricket will conclude on Thursday.
