Shakib reaches another milestone
Bangladesh batsmen Shakib Al Hasan, with a double ton, and Mushfiqur Rahim have mown down a host of records as they made hay in the Wellington sunshine, flaying the Kiwi bowlers around the Basin Reserve.
Shakib`s 217 is the highest Test score for Bangladesh, beating Tamim Iqbal`s 206, which stood for nearly two years.
The 29-year-old left-hander, who already holds his country`s record for most Test wickets at 159, was just the third Bangladesh batsman to score a double ton.
In his 45th Test he plundered 31 boundaries from 276 balls.
He offered three chances - the first when he was dropped by Mitchell Santner late on the first day.
He was on 137 when he hooked a short ball from Neil Wagner which wicket-keeper BJ Watling took diving to his right and claimed the catch.
However, replays showed he had grounded the ball as he slid along the grass.
He got another life on 189 when he was dropped by a diving Ross Taylor at backward point.
He finally fell four overs before stumps, chopping a delivery from Wagner on to his stumps.
His partnership of 359 with his captain Mushfiqur set a number of records, including Bangladesh`s highest partnership against all countries.
The tourists were 7-542 at stumps on the second day of the first Test in the capital as the Black Caps couldn`t stifle the free-flowing stroke play on good batting wicket.
Bangladesh scored 388 runs in entertaining style, at four an over, after starting the day at 3-154.
