Pedestrian killed in Mirsharai BNP infighting

A pedestrian was killed and several others were injured as two factions of the party clashed over the announcement of Mirsharai upazila and two municipal unit committees in the upazila in Chattogram on Wednesday, March 26.
The deceased was identified as Md Jabed, 45, son of Jahangir, a resident of Nilgiri residential area under Bayezid Bostami police station.
Mirsharai upazila BNP's member secretary Azizur Rahman Chowdhury said their leaders and activists were attacked and motorcycles bandalised in in front of the home of Baraiyarhat municipal BNP convener Main Uddin Liton this morning.
When they entered with a procession at Baraiyarhat municipal bazar around 12:00pm, the men of Nurul Amin Chairman attacked them with arms, he said, adding that a pedestrian was killed and nine others were injured in the attack.
Didarul Alam Miajee, former convener of Baraiyarhat municipal BNP, refuted the allegations, upazila BNP member secretary Aziz and Liton carried attack on their men.
UNB adds: Earlier, the administration had imposed Section 144 within 500 yards of the central Shaheed Minar in the upazila from 8:00 am on Wednesday to 8:00 am on Thursday to prevent potential clashes between the rival BNP factions.
One of the groupd, however, violated Section 144 by laying wreaths at the Shaheed Minar. The clash erupted due to tensions between the newly formed BNP committee and disgruntled leaders and activists who had been left out of party posts.
