UN report proves Sheikh Hasina a fascist: Fakhrul

BNP Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir on Thursday said the report of a UN Fact Finding Mission on human rights violations in Bangladesh proves that former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina was a fascist.
Speaking to reporters after a meeting with acting British High Commissioner James Goldman on Thursday (February 13), Fakhrul claimed the report exposes Sheikh Hasina’s role in disappearances, murders, human rights abuses, and the suppression of democracy.
"The UN report clearly proves that Sheikh Hasina is a fascist. All these incidents of violence, disappearances, and human rights violations were carried out on her orders," Fakhrul said.
The meeting took place at the BNP Chairperson’s Gulshan political office.
Fakhrul expressed relief over the UN report, saying, "We are relieved that the truth has finally come to light. When the UN says it, people believe it. But when political parties say the same, many refuse to believe." He also thanked the UN observer team for their findings.
He further accused the Awami League of violating human rights by creating Aynaghars to detain and torture innocent people. "We expect the Indian government to hand over Sheikh Hasina to the Bangladesh government so that she and her associates can be brought to justice," he added.
On the topic of elections, Fakhrul iterated the BNP’s opposition to proportional representation, calling it unsuitable for Bangladesh.
"We strongly oppose proportional elections. The people here are not accustomed to such a system, and we will not support it in any way," he said.
He emphasised that early elections are crucial for restoring stability and kickstarting economic development in the country.
Fakhrul also mentioned that British High Commissioner Sarah Cook is scheduled to meet with doctors treating BNP Acting Chairman Tarique Rahman and Begum Khaleda Zia in London. The meeting with Goldman was attended by British Political Counsellor Tim Duckett and BNP’s Shama Obayed, among others.
