A local leader of Swechchhasebak Dal was killed and at least 10 others were injured as two factions of BNP clashed over establishing supremacy in Cumilla’s Nangalkot on Saturday afternoon, February 1.

The victim, Md Selim Bhuiyan, 55, was the president of Hesakhal union Swechchhasebak Dal in the upazila.

Quoting locals, Nangalkot police station’s officer-in-charge AK Fajlul Haque said the supporters of Mobashwer Alam Bhuiyan, BNP’s executive committee member and upazila unit president, organised a rally at Bangadda Badsha Mia School and College in Bangadda Bazar area this afternoon.

Around 3:10pm, the followers of former lawmaker Abdul Gafur Bhuiyan were attacked by rivals when they were going past the rally, leading to a violent clash between two factions of the party, OC Fajlul said.

Several followers of Gafur Bhuiyan were injured in the incident and they were, later, taken to Nangalkot upazila health complex where the on-duty doctor declared Selim Bhuiyan dead, the OC added.

Former MP Gafur Bhuiyan blamed Mobashwer’s men for the attack but the latter rejected the accusation.
