Fakhrul calls for unity over division in politics
BNP Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir has emphasiSed the need for unity to restore democracy and save the country, urging against politics of division.
Speaking at the launching of the book "Rajbandir Jabanbandi" at the BNP Chairperson's Office in Gulshan on Thursday (January 9), he called for collective acknowledgment of everyone’s contributions to the nation’s movement and struggle.
Fakhrul said, “We should not engage in politics of division. What is most needed now is unity to save the country and restore democracy.” He lamented the lack of trust and unity among opposition forces, attributing it to a toxic competition for power.
“We are witnessing an unhealthy race for power, which has created instability. Stability can only be achieved when power is exercised with legitimacy and fairness,” he added.
Highlighting the BNP's legacy, Fakhrul said, “The first reform in the country was initiated by late President Ziaur Rahman, who introduced a multi-party system, moving away from a single-party rule. Reforms are necessary, but they must be backed by an elected parliament and government to ensure legitimacy.”
He cautioned against becoming entangled in unnecessary debates, calling for a focus on unity among democracy-loving people and those committed to independence. “I urge all political workers at every level to avoid creating divisions. We cannot afford to fragment the country or its people.”
Fakhrul criticised certain individuals for spreading divisive rhetoric, stating, “Some people have become desperate to divide the country and its people. They are making provocative statements. Please refrain from falling into these traps.”
Defending Khaleda Zia’s role in the nation’s history, Fakhrul said, “Khaleda Zia is the country’s first female freedom fighter. If not her, then who? Can those who directed the Liberation War from Theatre Road in Kolkata, such as Hasanul Haque Inu and Amir Hossain Amu, claim to be more significant freedom fighters?”
Fakhrul also expressed optimism about the legal battles of BNP Acting Chairman Tarique Rahman. “Our acting chairman will soon be free from his cases and will return to the country,” he stated confidently.
The event, chaired by BNP Chairperson's Adviser Ismail Zabiullah and moderated by Krishak Dal General Secretary Shahidul Islam Babul, featured journalist Shafik Rehman as the main discussant.
