NRC demands arrest of attackers on rally
The National Revolutionary Council has called for the immediate arrest of individuals involved in an attack on a civic rally at the Central Shaheed Minar.
The demand came after reviewing video evidence of the incident.
In a statement on Saturday evening, the party’s political head, Anisur Rahman, and organisational head, Md Shafiur Rahman, condemned the violence. According to the statement, the rally, held at 2:00pm, aimed to honor the families of the July martyrs. The People’s Rights Council spokesperson, Faruk Hasan, addressed the gathering at 4:00pm but was ambushed as he exited the event.
The attackers vandalised the venue, throwing chairs and creating panic, especially among women and children present. During the chaos, Rabeya Akhtar, a joint convener of the National Revolutionary Council and a prominent leader in the July movement, was assaulted. Others injured while defending Hasan included Syed Qutub, Ashraful Islam, SM Rafsanjani, Ariful Islam Shakib, Salimullah, and Hezbollah.
The statement highlighted that the attack, broadcast live on various media platforms, clearly showed the attackers' faces. The Revolutionary Council’s initial investigation identified two individuals, Sharif and Hillol, who allegedly traveled from Shyamoli to attend the rally before launching the attack.
The leaders criticised law enforcement for their inaction, stating that police officers present at the scene did not intervene despite prior requests for security.
They also rebuked the People’s Rights Council General Secretary, Rashed Khan, for making misleading statements instead of condemning the violence.
The Revolutionary Council urged both organizations—victims of simultaneous attacks—to jointly demand justice and the swift arrest of all perpetrators.
