Tarique questions advisers' evasiveness on election timeline
BNP Acting Chairman Tarique Rahman has questioned the interim government's reluctance to announce an election roadmap, alleging that advisers become visibly annoyed when asked about it.
He emphasised that transparency in government actions is essential to gain public trust and cooperation.
Speaking at a discussion organised by the BNP to mark Victory Day at the Engineers Institution in Dhaka on Sunday (December 15), Tarique Rahman joined the event online.
He asserted that announcing the election roadmap would enhance transparency and accountability, giving citizens clarity on the government's plans and timeframe for state reforms.
Tarique said that the people have a right to know how long it will take the interim government to implement necessary state reforms. He argued that a clear roadmap would foster administrative efficiency and demonstrate the government's commitment to addressing public concerns.
"There is no alternative to reforms for qualitative changes in the state and politics," he said, emphasizing that overcoming fascism requires democratic practices to be embedded in daily governance and societal routines.
Tarique pointed out that the nation is currently unified in its demand for a fair and transparent governance process. "The people are patient because they want the interim government to succeed," he remarked, adding that the government must demonstrate its intentions through concrete actions.
He also highlighted the struggles faced by citizens due to soaring commodity prices, saying that the burden of daily expenses is becoming unsustainable for many households.
He warned that if the government prioritises reforms without addressing immediate economic challenges, people may begin questioning whether reforms or daily survival should take precedence.
The BNP Acting Chairman reiterated his party's vision of building a discrimination-free society and urged the interim government to act decisively in the interest of the people.
