BNP Acting Chairman Tarique Rahman will return to Bangladesh once the pending cases against him are resolved, said BNP Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir upon his return from London.

Speaking to reporters at Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport on Thursday (December 12) after arriving on a Biman Bangladesh Airlines flight at 12:45pm, Fakhrul said, “There are many false and vindictive cases against him (Tarique Rahman). He will return once these cases are withdrawn or concluded through the court.”

During his visit, Fakhrul met Tarique Rahman, engaged with expatriate Bangladeshis, attended BNP events, and interacted with the press. “The purpose of my visit was fulfilled. It was a productive and meaningful trip,” he said.

When asked about Tarique Rahman’s message, Fakhrul relayed, “The Acting Chairman urged everyone to remain patient. He emphasised that the recent student and public movement has achieved a significant victory. To make this victory meaningful, we must work together, re-establish democracy, and prepare for the elections—the first step toward restoring democratic governance.”

Commenting on the interim government, Fakhrul expressed BNP’s support for the administration led by Professor Muhammad Yunus. “We, the political parties, support the interim government and expect them to carry out essential reforms and pave the way for free and fair elections,” he added.

Fakhrul, who traveled to London on November 30 with his wife, Rahat Ara Begum, also accompanied her for medical check-ups during the trip.

Several BNP leaders, including Farhad Hossain Azad, Abu Mohammad Ahsan Firoz, and Sadi Ahmed, along with media cell member Shairul Kabir Khan, welcomed Fakhrul at the airport.
