No rash decision on removing president: Fakhrul

BNP Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir emphasised Sunday that the interim government must operate strictly within the constitutional framework and avoid rash decisions, such as removing the president of the republic.

Fakhrul made these remarks in response to journalists' questions after laying a wreath at the grave of BNP founder Ziaur Rahman on the occasion of Jatiyatabadi Juba Dal’s founding anniversary.

When asked about the BNP’s stance on the Anti-Discrimination Student Movement's demand to remove President Mohammed Shahbuddin as the party sat with the students over the issue, Fakhrul said that BNP would discuss the matter within its highest forum, the standing committee, before making a formal decision. 

"The revolution needs to be consolidated to yield its results. Rash decisions should be avoided, and all actions should be within a constitutional framework. Electoral reforms are essential before the elections," he noted.

Despite BNP Chairperson Khaleda Zia’s illness, Fakhrul praised the Juba Dal under Tarique Rahman’s leadership, stating it is stronger than ever. "The Juba Dal will play a crucial role in supporting the student uprising and countering forces against a better Bangladesh," he added.

Addressing potential delays in the election, Fakhrul reiterated, "We’ve said repeatedly that elections should happen as soon as possible. Power must be transferred to a constitutional political force."
