422 BNP men killed in July-August movement: Fakhrul
BNP Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir has said that 875 people were killed during the July-August movement, which began with the quota reform protests and continued with the recent demands for Sheikh Hasina's resignation, according to a human rights organization’s report. Of the deceased, 422 were BNP leaders and activists.
Mirza Fakhrul made this statement while addressing a press conference at the BNP Chairperson’s political office in Gulshan, Dhaka, on Sunday.
He said this movement didn’t suddenly emerge, rather it was part of BNP’s long-standing struggle. There is no room to undermine BNP's contribution here.
BNP Secretary General further stated that, in fact, during the 2024 uprising, the BNP lost 422 martyrs, and in 2023, the number of martyrs was 1,551.
He also mentioned that there have been 423 enforced disappearances (with the total number across all political parties and among ordinary people being around 700), as well as 600,000 accused individuals and 150,000 cases filed.
BNP Standing Committee members Khandaker Mosharraf Hossain, Nazrul Islam Khan, Mirza Abbas, Abdul Moyeen Khan, and Salauddin Ahmed, among others, were present at the press conference.
