A former leader of Rajshahi University (RU) unit of Bangladesh Chhatra League (BCL) was lynched in Rajshahi on Saturday night.

The deceased was identified as Abdullah Al Masud, a store officer at RU Medical Centre and a native of Shibganj Upazila in Chapainawabganj.

He died while undergoing treatment at Rajshahi Medical College Hospital (RMCH).

SM Masud Pervez, Officer-in-charge of Boalia police station, confirmed the matter.

Source said that a group of students involved in the anti-discrimination movement found Masud in the Binodpur area of Rajshahi on Saturday afternoon. The agitated students began to beat him, and he was subsequently taken to Motihar and then Boalia police stations. Due to his serious injuries, Masud was later sent to the hospital, where he died that night.

Dr. Mahmudul Hasan Firoz, Acting Officer of the Emergency Department at RMCH, said that Masud was brought to the hospital at night with multiple injuries and in poor condition. He was quickly admitted to Ward 31.

The OC of Boalia Police Station said Masud was beaten following allegations of his involvement in the attack on students and others that occurred on August 5. He was later handed over to us. Noting his poor condition, we sent him to the RMCH for treatment.

The OC also said that he died after being taken to the hospital that night. As of now, no case has been filed regarding this incident. Since the beating occurred within the Motihar police station area, further legal action will be handled by the officials of the concerned police station.
