The Detective Branch of the Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) detained Haji Mohammad Salim, a former Awami League lawmaker from the Dhaka-8 constituency, in the capital’s Bangshal area on Sunday night.

He has already been accused in several murder cases.

Rabiul Hossain Bhuiyan, Joint Commissioner of the DMP (DB-North), confirmed the matter.

The Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) filed a case with Lalbagh police station against Haji Salim on charges of amassing illegal wealth on October 24, 2007. A Dhaka court sentenced him to 13 years in jail in the case on April 27, 2008. Haji Salim appealed to the High Court against the verdict on October 25, 2009, and the High Court overturned his sentence on January 2, 2011.

Later, the High Court upheld the 10-year sentence of Haji Selim in the case on April 25, 2022. He was then ordered to surrender to the lower court within 30 days. Following the order, he surrendered to the court on May 22, 2022 and the court ordered to send him to jail.

Haji Salim was born on October 5, 1958 in Dhaka. He studied up to class IX.
