Jamaat appeals for reviving registration in apex court

Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami will file a petition before the Supreme Court’s Appellate Division on Sunday (September 1) to get back its registration with the Election Commission as a party.

“An application will be made to the Chamber Court of the Appellate Division (of the Supreme Court) tomorrow to revive the dismissed appeal with regard to the cancellation of party registration,” Jamaat’s lawyer Advocate Mohammad Shishir Manir told journalists on Saturday (August 31).

He said the case pending in the Appellate Division has not been resolved after full hearing and since it was declared 'Dismissed for Default', therefore “we will apply for revival of the case.”

“If our appeal is allowed, we will get the registration back. We will get back the party symbol,” Shishir added.

The party decision came days after the government in an executive order allowed the party to carry on its activities but Jamaat decided to go through the legal procedure to get back its registration as well.

The Election Commission earlier scrapped Jamaat’s registration while the deposed premier Sheikh Hasina banned its activities as a political party as well on August 1, 2024.
