Police detained former lawmaker and Awami League’s publicity and publication secretary, Abdus Sobhan Miah alias Golap, from Nakhalpara in Dhaka on Sunday afternoon.

Tejgaon police station’s officer-in-charge, Md Mobarak Hossain, confirmed the detention.

With Awami League’s ticket, Golap was elected parliament member from the Madaripur-3 constituency in the 2018 general election.

In 2023, Organised Crime and Corruption Reporting Project, a global network of investigative journalists, in a report said Golap purchased a total of nine properties (flats/homes) worth around $40 lakh in New York between 2014 and 2019, but he did not mention the wealth information in his election affidavit.

On February 26 of the year, Barrister Syed Sayedul Haque Suman filed a writ petition with the High Court seeking its direction to launch an investigation into the allegations.

On February 27 of the same year, the High Court directed the Anti-Corruption Commission, ACC, to probe into the accusations.
