Few individuals of an unelected govt can’t reform state: Fakhrul

BNP Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir on Saturday said he does not believe that a few individuals from an unelected government can effectively reform the state. 

He called on the interim government to engage in discussions regarding an election roadmap.

“There is no alternative to reforming the country through an elected parliament,” Fakhrul asserted. “We place great emphasis on elections. Elections are crucial for state reform. I do not believe that a few individuals can achieve this alone. Reform should be accomplished through the participation of the people.”

Fakhrul made these remarks during a meeting held to mark the ninth death anniversary of former Prime Minister Kazi Zafar Ahmed. The event was organized by the Bhasani Anusari Parishad at the National Press Club on Saturday.

While expressing his expectations from the interim government, Fakhrul described its members as "qualified persons" and expressed hope that they would facilitate a fair election within a reasonable timeframe. 

“The Chief Adviser should quickly present his plans to the people and arrange swift elections through a clear roadmap,” he added.

Fakhrul also criticised Sheikh Hasina, calling her the "leader of fascism," and noted that some of her close associates have either fled or gone into hiding. He expressed concern about seeing individuals linked to Hasina's government in close proximity to the advisers of the interim government, stating that it makes them anxious.

Mirza Fakhrul emphasised that there has been no substantial, agenda-driven dialogue between the political parties and the government. 

He asked the interim government to consult with political parties and called on citizens and activists to remain vigilant against the possibility of a counter-revolution.
