Hasina, 33 others sued over 'mass killing' in May 5 rally

A case has been filed against former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina and 33 others on the allegations of mass killing in Hefazat-e-Islam’s rally in the capital’s Motijheel on May 5, 2013.

Others named in the case are former Home Minister Asaduzzaman Khan, private industry and investment adviser to former PM Hasina, Salman F Rahman, her defence and security adviser Tarique Siddique, Dhaka South City Corporation mayor Fazle Nur Tapash, former lawmakers Rashed Khan Memon and Hasanul Haque Inu, Awami League's joint secretaries general Mahbubul Alam Hanif and Jahangir Kabir Nanak, former Inspector Generals of Police Benazir Ahmed and Hasan Mahabub Khandaker, former Rapid Action Battalion chief AKM Shahidul Haque, National Security Intelligence, NSI, chief Ziaul Hasan, Biplob Kumar Sarker, former deputy commissioner of Motijheel Division of Dhaka Metropolitan Police, and then Motijheel police station's officer-in-charge, Omar Faruque.

Babul Sarder Chakhari, chairman of Bangladesh People’s Party, BPP, filed the case with the court of Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate Zaki Al Farabi on Sunday.

The court accepted the statement of the plaintiff and asked the officer-in-charge of the Motijheel police station to submit probe report.

According to the case statement, Hefazat-e-Islam placed a 13-point demand protesting the defamation of religion Islam and Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) by some blogers. The ogranisation arranged a rally at Shapla Chatter on May 5, 2013, as the government ignored their demands.

From 11:00pm on the night to 11:00am on the following day, the police and army personnel and other forces indiscriminately killed madrasa students and padestrians there placing barricade on the road and cutting off electricity connection in the area in the direction of Sheikh Hasina. After the mass killing, their bodies were taken to unknown place, the statement said.
