President Mohammed Shahabuddin on Tuesday dissolved the 12th Jatiya Sangsad following resignation of former prime minister Sheikh Hasina.

The move was taken as per decision of a high-level meeting with the chiefs of three services, leaders of various political parties, representatives of civil society, and leaders of the anti-discrimination student movement.

In addition, as per the decisions made at the meeting, BNP Chairperson Khaleda Zia was also released. The process of releasing those arrested between July 1, 2024, and August 5, 2024, as well as individuals implicated in various cases, has also begun, according to a press release from Bangabhaban.

The Anti-Discrimination Student Movement, which brought an end to the 16-year rule of the Awami League, set a deadline of 3:00pm on Tuesday for the dissolution of parliament to pave the way for the formation of an interim government.
