The Appellate Division of the Supreme Court (SC) has rejected a petition filed by the Awami League-nominated candidate for the Barisal-4 constituency Shammi Ahmed seeking to get back her candidacy.

As a result, Shammi Ahmed would not have the opportunity to contest the national polls scheduled to be held on January 7.

A six-member bench of the Appellate Division headed by Chief Justice Obaidul Hassan passed the order on Tuesday.

Earlier on December 19, the SC chamber judge affirmed a High Court order that upheld the Election Commission’s decision to cancel her nomination papers due to her dual citizenships.

On December 15, the Election Commission rejected her appeal against the cancellation of her candidacy by the returning officer.
