12 BNP men jailed for subversive acts

A court in Dhaka has sentenced 12 BNP leaders and activists to three years in jail in a sabotage case.

The convicts are Anwarul Azim, Haider Ali Babla, Md Alauddin, Shawkat, Md Parvez, Imran Hossain Imu, Sayeed Ahmed, Haji Farhad Rana, Arif Hossain Bappy, Fazlul Haque Moni, Haji Md Nazim Uddin and Md Sobhan.

Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate Saiful Islam delivered the verdict on Wednesday.

The court sentenced them to a year in jail under Section 147 of the Penal Code and a two-year prison sentence under Section 353.

They were also fined Tk 5,000 each, and failure to pay, they will have to serve three months more in jail.

However, both sentences - a year, and two years - will continue together, the verdict said.

The case statement said BNP leaders and activists allegedly committed subversive acts in Kotwali Police Station area in the capital in September of 2018 to intimidate people.

Later, police filed the case with the police station.
