The Appellate Division of the Supreme Court has refused to grant bail to BNP Dhaka city north unit convener Amanullah Aman in a corruption case in which the High Court upheld his 13 years’ jail sentence.

Justice M Enayetur Rahim, chamber judge of the SC’s Appellate Division, on Wednesday passed the order after hearing a bail petition filed by the BNP leader.

Earlier on Sunday, a Dhaka court denied bail to Amanullah Aman and ordered to send him to jail in the case filed for amassing illegal wealth beyond his known income source.

Judge Abul Kashem of Dhaka Special Judge’s Court-1 passed the order after the BNP leader surrendered before it seeking bail.

On September 3, Judge Abul Kashem of the Dhaka Special Judge’s Court-1 sent Sabera Aman, wife of BNP leader Amanullah Aman, to jail after rejecting her bail plea in the same case. Sabera surrendered before the court as per the orders of the High Court.

On September 5, the chamber judge of the Supreme Court granted her bail till January 15.

On August 7, the High Court released the full text of the 281-page judgment stating that the couple has to surrender before the lower court concerned within 15 days and uploaded it on its website.

Prior to that, a High Court division bench comprising Justice Md Nazrul Islam Talukder and Justice Khizir Hayat pronounced the judgment on May 30, upholding Amanullah Aman and his wife Sabera Aman’s jail sentence of 13-year and three-year terms respectively, in the case.

The Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) on March 6, 2007, filed the case with Kafrul Police Station in the capital against the duo.

The Special Judge Court on June 21, 2007, handed down the verdict. The couple filed an appeal against the judgment and the High Court on August 16, 2010, had acquitted them, allowing their appeal.

The ACC however, challenged the acquittal order. The Appellate Division on May 26, 2014, scrapped the High Court verdict and ordered a fresh hearing on appeal in the case.
