BCC polls: Mayor candidate Faizul Karim attacked
Mufti Syed Muhammad Faizul Karim, who is competing for mayoral post in the Barishal City Corporation (BCC) polls as the Islami Andolon Bangladesh-backed candidate, allegedly come under attack by the supporters of Awami League-backed mayoral candidate Abul Khair Abdullah Khokon Serniabat.
The incident took place at Sabera Khatun Girls High School polling centre at 22 no ward in the city around on Monday.
Faizul filed a written complaint to the Returning Officer and Police Commissioner over the matter.
Islami Andolon Bangladesh candidate said he went to visit the polling centre and saw the supporters of boat symbol were asking the voters to cast their votes for boat or go back. He and his supporters were attacked by them when he asked the presiding officer about it.
“I will fight till the end of the voting,” he said.
In this connection, Returning Officer Md Humayun Kabir said he received the complaint and will take step after investigation.
However, the voting in BCC elections is underway which began at 8am on Monday and will continue till 4pm.
Five other candidates, who are competing for the mayoral post, are Jatiya Party’s Iqbal Hossain Taposh (Plough), Zaker Party’s Md Mizanur Rahman Bachhu (Rose) and independent candidates Md Kamrul Ahsan Rupon (Table clock), Md Asaduzzaman (Elephant) and Md Ali Hossain Hawlader (Deer).
Besides, 119 candidates are in the race for the post of general councillor and 42 candidates for the reserved councillor post.
