BNP leader Aslam Chowdhury indicted in graft case

A court in Dhaka on Thursday framed charges against BNP joint secretary general Aslam Chowdhury in a case filed by Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) for amassing illegal wealth.

Judge Syed Arafat Hossain of Dhaka Special Judge Court-4 passed the order, scrapping a plea of the accused for exempting him of the charges. The court also set July 10 to start recording deposition of the witnesses.

ACC deputy director Md Nasir Uddin on December 25, 2019, filed the case.

According to the case documents, the anti-graft body on May 13, 2019, issued a notice to submit wealth statement against Aslam Chowdhury and his family. Aslam, who was behind bars at the time, sought three-month time to do that.

Following his plea, the ACC allowed him 21 and 15 working days in two separate occasions. But in spite of that, Aslam didn't file the wealth statement, making the ACC to lodge the case. The ACC on December 29, 2022, filed charge-sheet in the case.
