Pro-AL panel sweeps Bar Council polls
The ruling Awami League-backed panel swept the election to the Bangladesh Bar Council.
Attorney General Mahbubey Alam, chairman of the bar council, announced the official results of the election on Wednesday night.
Sammilita Ainjibi Somonnoy Parishad, the AL-backed lawyers` panel, bagged 11 out of the total 14 posts, while the pro-BNP lawyers’ panel won the remaining three posts.
The AL-blessed contenders have bagged five posts among seven general posts and six among seven group posts.
The candidates who have won the general posts are Barrister M Amir-Ul Islam, Abdul Baset Majumdar, Abdul Matin Khasru, SM Rezaul Karim and ZI Khan Panna.
The candidates who have won the group posts are Kazi Nazibullah Hero of group ‘A’, HR Jahid Anwar of group ‘B’, Ibrahim Hossain Chowdhury of group ‘C’, Parvej Alam Khan of group ‘E’, Mohammad Yahiya of group e and Mohammad Rezaul Karim of group ‘G’.
The candidates of BNP-backed Jatiyatabadi Ainjibi Oikya Panel, who have won the general posts, are Khandker Mahbub Hossain, Barrister AM Mahbub Uddin Khokon and Kaimul Haque.
The 14 elected members will assume the office for the next three years while AG Mahbubey Alam will take over the charge as chairman of the council by dint of his post.
The official results were declared at the bar council auditorium at night seven-day after the polls were held throughout the country on August 26.
The election to the Bangladesh Bar Council was held across the country on Wednesday.
A total of 43,302 voters cast their votes while at least 61 candidates – 32 for general posts and 29 for group posts – contested in the polls.
On July 9, The Appellate Division of the Supreme Court had deferred the election to the Bangladesh Bar Council until August 26.
Earlier on May 21, the High Court stayed for three months the election, which was scheduled for May 27, following objections over the voter list and polling procedure. -UNB
