Harunur Rashid, BNP lawmaker of Chapainawabganj-3, has resigned from the Parliament.

He submitted his resignation letter in-person to the Speaker Dr Shirin Sharmin Chaudhury at the Jatiya Sangsad Secretariat at 11am on Thursday.

Former BNP lawmakers Mosharraf Hosen and Gulam Mohammad Siraj, who recently resigned, were present during this time.

On December 11, a day after BNP’s Dhaka divisional mass rally, five out of the seven BNP MPs submitted their resignations in person to the Speaker as part of their party’s anti-government movement.

The lawmakers are Md Zahidur Rahman of Thakurgaon-3, Md Mosharof Hosen of Bogura-4, Gulam Mohammad Siraj of Bogura-6, Md Aminul Islam of Chapainawabganj-2, and Rumeen Farhana, from women’s reserved seats.

Harunur Rashid was abroad at the time and Abdus Sattar Buiyan, the ailing MP of Brahmanbaria-2, could not tender their resignations in person. They submitted their resignations through Rumeen Farhana.

Speaker Shirin Sharmin Chaudhury, after receiving the resignation letters, said that Harun sent the resignation letter through email where his scanned signature was used and that the MP would have to submit a fresh resignation letter if he wished to resign from the parliament.

Later, the Parliament Secretariat published a gazette notification declaring the seats of six lawmakers of the BNP vacant.
