Court rejects Fakhrul, Abbas's interim bail pleas
A court in Dhaka has rejected the interim bail pleas of BNP Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir and its Standing Committee Member Mirza Abbas in a case over the clash between police and BNP men at Nayapaltan in the capital.
Dhaka Metropolitan Sessions Court Judge Asaduzzaman passed the order after hearing the bail petition filed by their lawyer Syed Joynul Abedin Mesbah.
Earlier on December 15, Dhaka Additional Chief Metropolitan Magistrate Md Tofazzal Hossain turned down the bail pleas of the two BNP senior leaders in the same case.
On December 12, Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate Shafiuddin also denied bail to 224 leaders and activists of BNP, including Mirza Fakhrul and Mirza Abbas, and sent them to jail.
The detectives detained Mirza Fakhrul and Mirza Abbas from their respective homes in the capital early hours of December 8.
Later, they showed them arrested in a case filed with Paltan Police Station over the clash at Nayapaltan.
Allegations of inciting, planning and instructing barbaric attacks on police during the clash were brought against them in the lawsuit.
Earlier on December 7, police and BNP leaders-activists clashed in front of the party's Nayapaltan central office that left one dead and several injured.
