Fakhrul, Abbas, 222 BNP leaders denied bail
A Dhaka court has sent 224 leaders and activists of BNP including its Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir and Standing Committee Member Mirza Abbas to jail in a case filed over the clash between police and BNP men at Nayapaltan on Wednesday.
Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate Shafiuddin on Monday denied their bail and sent them to jail after hearing the bail petition filed by their lawyers on Sunday.
Earlier on Friday, the investigation officer of the case Inspector Tariqul Islam produced them before the court and filed a petition to keep them detained in jail until the completion of the investigation into the case.
Later, Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate Mohammad Jasim sent them to the jail rejecting their bail petitions.
The detectives on early Friday detained Mirza Fakhrul and Mirza Abbas from their respective homes in the capital.
Later, they were shown arrested in the case filed with Paltan Police Station over the clash between police and BNP men at Nayapaltan.
A man was killed and several others including policemen were injured in the clash. Police filed the case against 473 leaders and activists of the BNP and another 1,500-2,000 unnamed people.
