Court sends Fakhrul, Abbas to jail

A court in Dhaka has sent BNP Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir and its Standing Committee Member Mirza Abbas to jail in a case over the clash between police and BNP men at Nayapaltan in the capital.

Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate Mohammad Jashim on Friday passed the order after a hearing.

Earlier, investigation officer Inspector Tariqul Islam produced them before the court and prayed to confine them in prison until the completion of the probe while their lawyer sought bail.

Hearing both parties, the court turned down their bail petition and ordered the police to send them to jail.

Earlier, the detectives detained Mirza Fakhrul and Mirza Abbas from their respective homes in the capital early today.

Later, they showed them arrested in a case filed with Paltan Police Station over the clash between police and BNP men at Nayapaltan.

DB chief Harun-or-Rashid said the charge against them is that they incited, planned and instructed barbaric attacks on police and the throwing cocktails.
