B'baria JCD leader killed in clash with police

A local leader of Jatiyatabadi Chhatra Dal was killed in a clash with police in Bancharampur upazila of Brahmanbaria district on Saturday afternoon.

Deceased Md Nayan Mia, 22, was the vice president of the upazila's Sonarampur union unit JCD.

Brahmanbaria district JCD member secretary Mohsin Ridoy said police suddenly attacked BNP, Jubo Dal, and Chhatra Dal leaders and activists in Bancharampur Police Station area this afternoon when they were distributing leaflets there to make a success BNP's December 26 divisional mass rally in Cumilla.

Sonapur union JDC vice president Md Nayan Mia was shot and Bancharampur municipality Jubo Dal convener Iman Ali received serious injury in the attack, he said.

Later, Nayan died on the way to Dhaka for treatment and Iman was being treated at a hospital in the district, he added.

Bancharampur Model Police Station officer in-charge (OC) Nur-e-Alam alleged the BNP-Chhatra Dal leader-activists attacked the police station and tried to snatch away police's arms.

He and four other cops were hurt as BNP and JCD leaders and activists lobbed brickbats toward them, he said, adding that the situation is now under control.

Nabinagar police circle's additional superintendent Sirajul Islam said they were informed that a man of Chhatra Dal passed away on the way to Dhaka Medical College Hospital, Dhaka.

Earlier, Superintendent (SP) of Brahmanbaria district Police Md Anisur Rahman said BNP and police locked into an altercation during leaflet distribution and later, it turned into a chase and counter chase.

At that time, a man was shot as police opened fire in self-defense, he added.

DMCH Police Camp in-charge inspector Md Bachchu Mia said Nayan was declared dead by the hospital's emergency department doctors around 8 pm.
