DU BCL leader sent to jail in extortion case

A court in Dhaka on Thursday sent a Dhaka University Chhatra League leader to jail in a case filed for extortion and beating.

Accused Aktarul Karim is the deputy office secretary of Muktijoddha Ziaur Rahman Hall unit Chhatra League and a student of the 2014-15 session of Bangla department.

Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate Abu Sayeed passed the order after police had produced him before the court following completion of a one-day remand.

Earlier on Monday, the BCL leader was detained during alleged extortion by him beating an employee of Sheikh Hasina National Institute of Burn and Plastic Surgery.

Later, he was shown arrested in the case lodged by the victim with Shahbagh Police Station in this connection.

The case statement said Aktarul and unidentified two/three others demanded Tk 5000 extortion to Monir near the institute and beat up him with stick and rod after he refused to give money.

Later, adjacent people caught the accused but the other attackers managed to flee.
