Khaleda walks free from jail after 775 days
After a long 775-day, BNP chief Begum Khaleda Zia on Wednesday got release from prison conditionally.
Imprisoned Khaleda Zia had been undergone treatment at Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujib Medical University (BSMMU) since April 1 last year.
Khaleda's brother Shamim Iskandar, her sister Selima Rahman, and BNP secretary general Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir and others received her at the hospital around 4:25pm.
After release, the former Bangladesh prime minister was taken to her Gulshan residence 'Firoza'.
Earlier on Tuesday, Law, Justice and Parliamentary Affairs Minister Anisul Huq said that the government decided to release Khaleda Zia from prison, suspending her sentence for six months on humanitarian ground and considering her age.
"During the six-month period, she will have to comply with two conditions: will receive treatment from home but cannot go abroad," the minister had said.
Khaleda had been convicted in the Zia Orphanage Trust corruption case on February 8, 2018. Since then she had been served jail. She was found guilty in another corruption case later the same year.
