Hizb ut-Tahrir chief coordinator acquitted, 2 jailed

A Dhaka court has sentenced two members of banned militant outfit Hizb ut-Tahrir to two years in jail and acquitted four others including its chief coordinator in a case filed under the Anti-terrorism Act.  

Judge Majibur Rahman of the Anti-terrorism Special Tribunal of Dhaka on Sunday passed the order. 

The court also issued an arrest warrant against convicted Saidur Rahman and Touhidul Alam as they are on run, said tribunal bench clerk Ataur Rahman.

The four others who got acquittal are Hizb ut-Tahrir Professor Mohiuddin Ahmed, Joint Coordinator Kazi Morshedul Haque Plabon and members Tanvir Ahmed, Abu Yousuf Ali. 

Detective Branch of police Inspector Md Nurul Amin, also investigation officer for the case, submitted a charge sheet against the six accused on February 9, 2013. The charges were further formalised against the accused on September 27, 2016.

According to the case statement, several Hizb ut-Tahrir men distributed anti-government posters and leaflets to pedestrians on Road-2 in Sector-2 of Uttara on April 18 in 2010.
