The Public Administration Minister and Awami League (AL) Presidium Member Syed Ashraful Islam was laid to rest at Banani graveyard in the capital on Sunday afternoon. 

The first namaz-e-janaza of Syed Ashraf was held at the South Plaza of the Jatiya Sangsad Bhaban in the morning.

The body was taken to the Circuit House premises in Mymensingh by a helicopter from Kishoreganj where his second namaz-e-janaza was held at historic Sholakia Eidgah Maidan around 12noon.

His third namaz-e-Janaza was held at Anjuman Eidgah ground here around 2:45 pm.

AL General Secretary Advocate Moazzen Hossain Babul, AL Joint General Secretary Mahbubul Huq Hanif , Mohanagar AL President Ahtamul Alam, District AL President Advocate Jahirul Huq Khoka, Zila Parishad Chairman Yunus Khan Pathan, City Corporation Administrator Iqramul Huq Titu, District AL President Motiur Rahman, Jamalpur District AL President Advocate Baki-Billah and freedom fighter Golam Rabbani, among others, paid their last tribute to Syed Ashraful Islam by paying wreath on his coffin. 

After the janaza, the body of Syed Ashraf, adorned with the national flag and flowers, was given “Guard of Honour”.

He died at the Bangkok hospital aged 68 after undergoing treatment for lung cancer for long. He is survived by a daughter. His wife Sheila Islam died in London in 2017.

Syed Ashraf was born in Mymensingh in 1952. His father Syed Nazrul Islam was acting President of Mujibnagar Government in 1971 and one of the key figures of Bangladesh independence struggle.
