Govt not linked with BNP men's arrests: Shajahan Khan

Shipping Minister Shajahan Khan on Friday said the government has no involvement with the recent arrests of the leaders and activists of BNP.

"All of them are accused in different cases. Police and other law enforcement agencies are arresting them as per the law. The arrestees can be freed again after securing bails (from court). The government never harasses BNP leaders and activists. BNP is raising such allegations only for political purposes," he said while laying the foundation stone of Sadar Upazilla Muktijoddha Complex in Madaripur town Friday morning.

"BNP has carried out anarchy in the past in the name of agitation. So, for the sake of protecting law and order, police are arresting the people accused in different cases. During BNP's tenure, they used police for beating the Awami League men. But we never got involved in sabotage. We didn't burn or beat them to death. Now people get scared when they hear BNP's programs," he added.

Madaripur District Council Chairman Md Miajuddin Khan, Deputy Commissioner (DC) Md Wahidul Islam, Superintendant of Police (SP) Mohammad Sarwar Hossain and Executive Engineer of LGED Maloy Kumar Chakrabarti were present on the occasion, among others.

LGED is implementing the project at a cost of Taka 2.05 crore.
