Shafin Ahmed declared as DNCC mayor candidate
Renowned singer and composer Shafin Ahmed has been declared as a mayoral candidate for the next Dhaka North City Corporation (DNCC) by-polls.
The chairman of Nationalist Democratic Movement (NDM) Bobby Hajjaj declared his name as their candidate at a press conference at National Press Club in the capital on Tuesday.
Shafin began his musical career at a young age, when he grew up in a musical family. His father, Kamal Das Gupta, was a noted music director, while his mother, Feroza Begum, was a Nazrul Sangeet singer.
He took lessons about Nazrul Sangeet in his childhood. He was exposed to western musical influences since he studied in England, along with his elder brother, Hamin Ahmed. They then founded Band Miles which went on to become a leading musical group in Bangladesh.
He produced several songs including Chand Tara Shurjo, Firiye Dao, Jala Jala, Prothom Premer Moto and Fera Alena.
It is mentionable that, Annisul Huq had been elected the DNCC mayor contesting the DNCC election held on April 28, 2015 with Awami League ticket.
He died in London on 30 November while undergoing medical treatment there. On 4 December the mayoral post was declared vacant compelling a by-poll to be held within 90 days.
