AL will support CEC for holding fair election: Nasim

Health and Family Welfare Minister Mohammed Nasim today said Awami League (AL) would support the Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) to hold the next general election in a free and fair manner.

"AL will support the CEC as per its demand to make its best efforts to hold the 2019 general election in a free, fair and credible manner," he said.

Nasim was speaking as the chief guest at the launching ceremony of Central Nebulizer System at National Institute of Diseases of the Chest and Hospital in city's Mohakhali area.

Access to Information (a2i) Programme of Prime Minister's Office and the hospital jointly organised the event with Director (admin) of the Directorate General of Health Services Dr Samir Kanti Sarkar in the chair.

Terming election "one of the major safeguards for democracy", Nasim, also the AL Presidum Member, said, "We (AL Leader) will sit with CEC tomorrow and place 11-point specific proposals to help the EC to hold a fair election as a free and election is prerequisite for protecting democracy."

"And it [the EC] needs everyone's support to achieve that. Otherwise, the country's democracy will be at stake like previous time."

The senior AL leader urged the people of the country to stand beside the Prime Minister for the next several years for building a successful country saying, "None, but Awami League government led by Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina can make overall development and maintain peace across the country."

He also urged the BNP leaders not to run away from the field of the election saying, "You can make criticism of us, but you should not run away from the election for the sake of the democracy."

"An independent EC is needed to conduct a free and fair election, not the supportive government. General elections in countries around the world are being conducted by election commissions, not any government system and no election will be held behind the Constitutions in the country," he added.

About the Central Nebulizer System, the Minister said, "This system will be introduced at every corner of the country."

Through this system, many patients will be able to get services at the same time and this system is more functional and useful, he added.
