Jamaat calls hartal for Thursday

Jamaat-e-Islami called a dawn-to-dusk hartal for Thursday to protest against the Metropolitan Magistrate Court order that granted 10-day remand for eight Jamaat-e-Islami activists, including its central leader Moqbul Ahmed, in two separate cases.

In a press statement on Tuesday, the party’s acting amir Mujibur Rahman announced the daylong hartal hours after the verdict.

Earlier, a Dhaka court has placed Jamaat-e-Islami ameer Maqbul Ahmed and seven other top leaders of the party on 10-day remand for each of them in two cases filed under explosives act and special powers act.

Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate Golam Nabi passed the order after hearing on Tuesday.

Investigation officer of the cases and Inspector of Kadamtali police station Md. Saju Mia produced them before the court and sought 20-day remand for each of them (10-day for each case).

Detective Branch (DB) of Dhaka Metropolitan police arrested the top Jamaat leaders from a house at sector 6 in Dhaka’s Uttara area around 9pm on Monday night.

The arrestees are Jamaat-e-Islami central ameer Maqbul Ahmed, Nayeb-e-ameer Mia Golam Parwar, secretary general Shafiqur Rahman, his personal assistant Nazrul Islam, Chittagong city ameer Muhammad Shajahan, secretary Nazrul Islam, Chittagong south district ameer Zafar Sadek and central Jamaat staff Nazrul Islam.

DB Police filed two cases with Kadamtali police station against them alleging that they were planning to carry out subversive activities.
