Defamation case: Trial against Mirza Fakhrul starts Oct 23

A Dhaka court on Sunday framed charges against BNP Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir in a defamation case filed for his ‘derogatory’ comments.

The court fixed October 23 to start trial of the case.

On September 1, 2014, SM Nur-e-Alam Siddique, vice-president of Bangladesh Awami Matshyajibi League, filed a defamation case against BNP’s then acting secretary general Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir on charge of making ‘derogatory comments’ against Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina.

Mirza Fakhrul, now on bail in the case, pleaded not guilty and demanded justice after Metropolitan Magistrate Nur Nabi read out the charge to him.

Following a report submitted by Paltan police on December 18, the court summoned Fakhrul while another Dhaka court on January 22 issued arrest warrant against him as he did not appear before it.

Fakhrul was arrest in connection of the case on January while released on bail on July 14.
