NAP for enactment of law for EC formation

The National Awami Party (NAP) proposed making a law and regulations for formation of the Election Commission (EC) during talks with President Abdul Hamid at Bangabhaban today.

A 10-member NAP delegation led by its executive president Amina Ahmed met the President in response to his initiatives to hold talks with political parties on constituting a new EC and gave the proposal to him.

The delegation placed a 7-point proposal in the discussion held at the Darbar Hall of Bangabhaban this afternoon, President`s Press Secretary Joynal Abedin told reporters.

According to the proposal, the search committee should comprise of people like justices, former vice-chancellors of public universities and men from other professions having belief in the spirit of the Liberation War.

The delegation also proposed arranging debate and meeting with candidates prior to national elections with a view to holding elections in a free and fair manner. President Hamid said the opinion and proposals of political parties will play a positive role in forming a strong EC.

The President initiated the formal talks with political parties for formation of EC on December 18 last year.

The tenure of the current Kazi Rakibuddin Ahmad-led EC expires in February.

Secretaries concerned to the President were present.
