Mother, daughter burnt alive in Jhenaidah

A mother and her 18-month-old daughter were burnt alive allegedly and two others injured as miscreants set their house afire at Faraspur village in Kaliganj upazila of the district on Tuesday night.

The deceased were identified as Taslima Begum, 45, wife of Nazrul Islam alias Chan Miah and their daughter Tasmia.

Additional superintendent of police Ajbahar Ali Sheikh said miscreants set afire at the house of Chan Miah by pouring petrol when they were asleep at about 2 am.

Local people rescued four members of the family from the house and first rushed them to Jessore Medical College Hospital from where they were shifted to Dhaka Medical College Hospital (DMCH).

Taslima and her daughter Tasmia succumbed to their injuries on the way to DMCH at about 5 am on Tuesday.

Injured Urmi, elder daughter of Nazrul, claimed that her husband Kamal Hossain torched their house.

She also alleged that Kamal used to torture her since their marriage for dowry. Kamal sent Urmi back to her father`s house one week ago.

A case was filed with Kaliganj Thana.

Officer-in-charge of the thana Anwar Hossain said police launched a campaign to arrest the miscreants.

Local lawmaker Anwarul Azim Anar and Superintendent of Police Altaf Hossain visited the spot.
