Seven killed in Habiganj road accident

At least seven people have been killed and twenty others were also injured when a bus hit a stationed truck at Jalalpur under Nabiganj upazila of Habiganj district around 10pm Friday.

Six of the deceased were identified as Sohada Begum, 40, wife of a local Awami League leader Mostak Ahmed, Mehedi, Mostak’s son, Abu Saleh Hawladar, a soldier of Jalalabad Cantonment, Mahsin alias Tipu, 40, a supervisor of Hanif Paribahan, hailing from Laxmipur, its helper Tarikul, hailing from Bagerhat district, and Arif Azad, a salesman of a pharmaceutical company.

Police said a Sylhet-bound ‘Hanif Paribahan’ bus from Dhaka collided head-on with the stationary truck on the Sylhet-Dhaka highway in the area around 9:30pm, leaving three people dead on the spot and 34 others injured.

The injured, including Awami League leader Mostak, his son Monayem and daughter Mim, were rushed to Osmani Medical College Hospital where four other injured people died after admission around 2 am on Saturday.

Traffic on the busy road remained halted for two hours following the road accident.

Meanwhile, angered by the incident, locals set fire to a bus of ‘Hanif Paribahan’ at Kadamtoli in Dakkhin Surma upazila around 2 am on Saturday.

Later, a firefighting unit rushed in and doused the flame.
