Yunus thanks Trump for positive response to tariff pause request

Chief Adviser Muhammad Yunus has expressed his gratitude to US President Donald Trump following the latter's announcement of a 90-day pause on tariffs for most nations.

In a swift response, Professor Yunus took to X (formerly Twitter) to thank the US president for the decision, which excludes China.

"Thank you, Mr. President, (@POTUS) for responding positively to our request for a 90-day pause on tariffs," Yunus wrote, tagging Trump's official account. "We will continue to work with your administration in support of your trade agenda," he added.

The post comes shortly after Trump’s announcement to temporarily suspend the recently imposed reciprocal tariffs for all nations except China.

On April 2, Trump had introduced tariffs targeting dozens of countries, including a 37 per cent tariff on Bangladesh, as part of his administration's efforts to address global trade imbalances.

On April 7, Chief Adviser Yunus had reached out to President Trump, requesting negotiations to reconsider the tariffs.

Yunus proposed a  reduction of up to 50 per cent in US export tariffs to Bangladesh and urged the US to postpone the application of reciprocal tariffs on Bangladeshi goods for three months.

He argued that the extension would provide Bangladesh with adequate time to implement measures aimed at boosting imports from the United States.

In a formal letter addressed to Trump, Yunus had emphasised Bangladesh’s commitment to supporting America’s trade agenda while highlighting the potential disruption to bilateral trade relations caused by the current tariff measures.
