No security threat for Pahela Baishakh celebration: Jahangir
Home Adviser Lt Gen (Retd) Md Jahangir Alam Chowdhury speaks at a press briefing at the Home Ministry’s conference room in the Secretariat following a law-and-order meeting on Tuesday.

Home Adviser Lt Gen (Retd) Md Jahangir Alam Chowdhury on Tuesday said that no security threat has been received regarding the celebration of Chaitra Sangkranti and Pahela Baishakh, the first day of the Bangla New Year 1432.

“There is no security threat surrounding the celebration of Pahela Baishakh,” he told reporters during a briefing at the Home Ministry’s conference room in the Secretariat following a meeting on law and order.

The Home Adviser assured the public that all necessary measures have been taken to ensure a peaceful celebration of the festival and that no untoward incidents are expected.

“The celebration will take place not only in Dhaka but across the country,” he said, adding that metropolitan and district police will implement necessary security arrangements under their respective jurisdictions.

“They will make security arrangements considering any potential threats,” he added.

The Home Adviser said that instructions have been given to ensure foolproof security, particularly for events such as the traditional rally (previously known as Mongol Shobhajatra), as well as gatherings at Ramna Batamul, Rabindra Sarobar, Hatirjheel, and various district and upazila venues.

“All necessary measures will be taken so that security concerns do not hamper the celebrations,” he assured.

Responding to a question, Cultural Affairs Adviser Mostofa Sarwar Farooki said this year’s Pahela Baishakh celebrations would be more inclusive, with the participation of 26 ethnic communities in addition to the Bangalees.

He also noted that Dhaka University (DU) authorities would decide the name of the rally to be brought out from the campus, after consulting all stakeholders. The official announcement is expected from the DU authorities on April 10.

The Cultural Affairs Adviser added that the list of official programmes marking Pahela Baishakh and Chaitra Sangkranti would be announced in writing tomorrow.
